I have stepped into the lipo age, I made an order today, and got lipos for my cars trucks, planes, and my crawler. bounce

But I have a few questions that google and the RCC search engine isn't helping me with. Can you over charge these batteries? Like if I put it in my crawler and run it for a minute and then put it back on the charger, will it hurt it? I'm curious because I can't afford to get 3-4 packs to swap out between courses, so I normally charge my battery between courses.

Do you guys charge your lipos inside something? It was suggested to me that I use an old ammo box, to charge and store them in.

I run a 2000Mah 3 Cell on my crawler and I have yet to have to charge it at all between runs. The great thing about LIPO is that it runs at 100% discharge from start to finish. But when it is done it is done. You don't end up having a battery that starts off strong and get weaker as the day goes on. Usually when I get home I will stick it on the charger and it is about 1/4 of the way used. You do not have to worry about the Battery building up a "memory" or anything like that. just make sure to balance it every time you charge it so the cells keep the same about of charge. I run LIPO in my Rustler as well (5000Mah in it) and I have not had any trouble with it. Had it about a year or so now. Once you go LIPO you will never want to go back. If you had said something about wanting LIPO I would have offered to order them for you. I get a 10% discount at maxamps. Smile

I didn't spend alot of cash, but this is the Charger and Battery I got.

I will probably get a super brain 977 soon, but right now this little one will work fine, also it has alot of great reviews!

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3823&Product_Name=3E_Lipo_Charger_2-5Cell_w/_Balancer

And here is the battery I got.
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4906

I will only be using the small battery during comps, because I can mount it really low. I plan on getting some bigger packs for when I'm just having fun.

I didn't realize that the Max Amps packs were that cheap, now I notice, I could have gone for guaranteed quality for only $15 more. I will be ordering all my future lipos from Max Amps as I order all my NIMH batts through them now and the service is awesome!

yup. I love max amps packs. and like you said their customer service is great. That does not look like a bad LIPO but I have never heard of them. Between the threat of LIPO fire and an off brand I would just say be careful.

Post by Shaun Sun Aug 03, 2008 6:12 pm

I just realized a small problem.

I ordered this lipo
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4906

And this charger
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=3823&Product_Name=3E_Lipo_Charger_2-5Cell_w/_Balancer

The chargers charges at 1.3amp, will I have any problem with that? I don't mind if it kills that battery with in a short while, but I'm worried about it possibly swelling and catching fire?

Shouldn't a 860mah battery be charged at like .5amps?

I'm a moron Sad

hmmmm... yea I think you have a point there. If I am not mistaken (and I have been at work all day and am a bit brain numb right now) mine changes how many amps it is charging at depending on how empty the battery is. I think mine starts off really high and then when the pack is about 50% full or so it starts lowering them Amps. When it hits 0 it is done. My charger has an LCD read out on it so I can watch it changing. I don't see one on that one that you ordered and I don't know much about it. It may start off at 1.3 and then lower depending on the charge but I am not 100% sure about that.

Hobby City rocks! I found a better lipo charger last night.
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5549&Product_Name=IMAX_B5_Balance_Charger_1-5_Cells

I sent an E-mail to them, and they changed my order and shipped it out the door, they just asked me that I pay the difference as soon as possible.

That looks like a much better charger. I still like the Hyperion chargers myself but it looks a lot better than the one you had.

Man, the ware house didn't get the modification to the order, so they sent the other charger, for $45 they made me a deal and said it(the Imax B5) would be here by Friday, thats $45 for shipping and the charger, not to bad of deal. I really didn't have $45 to spend but I don't have alot of options, hopefully I can sell the other charger, if not I'm not to sure my scaler will be done in time for crawlapalooza pale

They also tossed in a few little gifts for the mishap, I wonder what they are Very Happy

VXL with a 5000MAH 3S and super high geared. I want to take it on the highway one of these days but I worry about the speeding ticket. lol It is set up for a 70 Mph run right now minus the fact that I smashed it into a tree and broke it all to hell last time I had it out. I need to do a few hundred dollars of work to get it running again but all of my money is going into my crawler right now.
