Kamikaze Kustoms Zero D Build
Well, I have had this chassis in hand for a few weeks, but wanted to wait till after Crawlapalooza to start the build.
I will be using the Kamikaze Kustoms Zero D chassis.
First of all I needed to punch some holes in the skid so I could mount the side plates.
The R2D Trans, paired with a Axiom 55 turn lathe motor fits nicely.
I will be attempting to do BTA steering with this build. Here is the mount I made for my Battery and Servo, keep in mind it needs alot of work still.
A Small mock up, I will be using 1/4 inch solid aluminum rod for the links, I'm using the Althread for mock up, because it is easy to cut, and adjust.
I will have more in the morning. I have to say, this chassis is awesome, I have 3 inches of ground clearance and the highest point of the chassis, is just over a 1/16th of an inch above the tires.

Here is an Update, I got an idea of where I want the links to end up. I also got a little more work done to the tie rod, the final version of the tie rod, will be made from 1/8 inch aluminum.
Still not finished with the tie rod, but getting closer.
What I'm planning on for the links.
R2D, is nice and snug inside the chassis.

Looking good. Behind the axle steering , cool. I been thinking about that too.

Re: Kamikaze Kustoms Zero D Build
I hope it works good, the last few comps my steering linkage seemed to get caught up on stuff, so I'll just eliminate the problem all together
I need to pick up some harder springs, but this is what I got after a little work this morning. I found out that I can bump it up to 3 1/2" of ground clearance and still be able to stand it on its side with the r2, motor, and electronics sitting in it. I really need to get a hold of some shorter shocks.

If you drop your ride height to about 2 3/4, what is your wheel base then.
I ride about 2 1/2 at ride height and it will droop to 3 1/2 when I crest over something. And try turning your shocks over , get the heaviest part of your shock lower.

Re: Kamikaze Kustoms Zero D Build
I've been busy and haven't had time to work on this, I finally got some time to today and got a bit done, I got my dig servo mounted, and I got my 1/8th" tie-rod made, it only took my a hundred cut off wheels to get it cut out, and I still have alot of clean up to do.
All I have to do is cut the links, and a drag link. Then I'm either going to polish everything aluminum or have it anodized red, what do you guys think? I can't wait till I finish it and my dad heals and I can go kick some ass at some comps..... Naw I'll loose anyway.
The servo is straight, it just looks weird in the pics, I still have alot of clean up to do on the tie-rod.
Sorry for the bad pictures.
Thank you,
Shaun

Thanks Darkhorse, its getting closer, I can't wait to complete it
Got the front end done today, drag link, upper and lower links, also got the dig set up. I'll try and get the rear finish tomorrow, just 4 links to go and mount the electronics, then I can give it a shake down run
I'm thinking of just leaving the links and parts how they are, it gives it a home made look with all the tooling marks and everything in them Gives it character
Gotta clean up the link, And the trans apparently it has some carpet fibers on it:D And yes, I do need to cut the screw down.
Don't mind the electronics
Thanks,
Shaun
Re: Kamikaze Kustoms Zero D Build
I haven't got to try it yet, but it should be awesome. I designed it so that its completly out of the way from the front and back of the axle
Re: Kamikaze Kustoms Zero D Build
I think the bigest trick with the BTA steering is during articulation, with all the links in there too.Shaun wrote:I haven't got to try it yet, but it should be awesome. I designed it so that its completly out of the way from the front and back of the axle

Yeah, I have quite a few hours into it, now lets just hope it works good,
Got the rear finished. The servo I had for the dig turned out to be dead, I guess I have to do with out dig for a while, since I don't have the money for a HS-225MG.
If anyone is wondering I used 1/4 inch solid aluminum rod for the chassis spacers, drag link, and links.
I decided to just go ahead and polish everything, I can always anodize it later, and I probably will. I'll try and get on polishing it in the next few days.
Thanks,
Shaun

Re: Kamikaze Kustoms Zero D Build
Thanks, its still a work in progress. I got it running minus dig, I have an interview at Hobby Town tomorrow so I'll wait and see if I get the job before I order a servo.
Runs great, super stable, and will crawl over anything. The other OKRCRC guys better watch out for me this season"thumbsup"
Its got a bit more flex, but I might limit it a little bit, I don't want it to have very much.
New angle on the dig. I'm going to redo the link.
Complete with battery and body, and electronics. If it had some hybrid foams it would be even more stable.
How can you beat that? 3" of ground clearance and still stand it on its side, with a shafty! Now go buy your self a ZERO!
When it gets a little warmer I'll get some pics and vids on the rocks, right now its 16 degrees out side.
I got alot more work to do, but it runs. I'll also be doing a body for this, grappler, black, with a red rising sun coming out of the front lower portion of the door.

I know I wish I had some sponsors, doing this hobby sure is hard with out sponsors or cash.
Re: Kamikaze Kustoms Zero D Build
It takes a big sponsor to get stuff free. Most the sponsors I've had over the years gave me stuff for cost and a little free stuff. AKRCC so far has been free stuff. I do work for it in R&D I guess.
Nothing is for free.

True, but a discount would help, lol.
I just weighed my truck, its 5.45lb complete
Re: Kamikaze Kustoms Zero D Build
I finally got it running, I have taken it out for a shake down run, and it did very good. It handles excellent, I was amazed at what it went through.
When I get paid on Friday, I have to order this list of parts.
Axial Harden Ring and Pinion(X2)
Integy Aluminum Axle C
Integy Aluminum Knuckle
HS-85MG dig servo
I also got the wiring cleaned up

More progress, a shame it has taken so long, but crazp happens when you work 7 days a week, lol.
Had to swap my front ring and pinion.

My new foam set up I'll be trying this weekend at our 2 day camp 'n' comp.
Sorry for the bad lighting, but here is a pic of the truck assembled.

Got the VW bug body.
I love how this thing turned out. I kinda messed up on the roof, but you can't tell it to much.
Not very good pics.
